Why don't you smile, Girl?

BY Emma Quintana

This is a collaborative social practice artwork about public shaming and verbal sexual harassment and abuse. I've collected these catcalls for the past 5 years from womxn from different countries, cultures, identities, and backgrounds. Many times these verbal attacks leave long-lasting scars and emotional damage on the targets of the harassment. The womxn are 6-92, and this type of objectification starts early and lasts a lifetime. These engraved wooden posts have the collected words burned into the surface and the most common word is, "Smile".
